Once he left, I turned the gas to it back on and kept trying to light it. Eventually it lit, and stayed lit. Perhaps I should have kept trying before calling but to be told I need a whole new heater was not the right answer. I paid $75.00 to fix the problem myself.
I called in for someone to come look at my water heater - the pilot light was out and wouldn't stay lit. He showed up on time, but that was about the only thing that went right. He was very quiet, and didn't seem to want to explain to me what he was looking at, and was very vague when answering my questions. He said he couldn't get it to stay lit either, and since the heater got wet, it was done for and I needed a new one. Upon leaving my house, he turned the gas off to the heater and said to get one installed from them it would cost $1,000.
